Eigentlich führen Nat, IQ und Scooter ein ganz normales Leben als amerikanische Stubenfliegen - wäre da nicht ihr pubertärer Leichtsinn, der sie auf die Idee bringt, die erste Mondbegehung des Menschen unmittelbar mitzuerleben. Also verstecken sie sich unauffällig in den Helmen der Astronauten und heben ab zu einem großen Abenteuer. Es dauert nicht lange, bis sie von der NASA und schließlich den Astronauten bemerkt und gejagt werden. Und zu allem Übel sind auch noch russische Fliegen mit an Bord, die ihre amerikanischen Artgenossen mit allen Mitteln daran hindern wollen, die ersten Insekten auf dem Mond zu sein.
